Animal Farm
Before I read `Animal Farm`, I thought it would be a childish story just about a peaceful farm with several domestic animals. But, after I closed the last leaf of that book, I could find that there was much more profound message than I expected, and I could think deeply about what the dictatorship really is.
The animals in Manor Farm rise in rebellion and succeed in owning the farm. Being the most intelligent animal above all, pigs take the leadership. There are two preeminent boars among the pigs named Snowball and Napoleon, but they have different opinion from each other at all the times even in a trivial affair. After all, Napoleon drives away Snowball with violence of frightful dogs. Napoleon starts his dictatorship, and the other animals, pitifully, just suff¡¦(»ý·«)
ut watching.
This fable satires Stalin`s totalitarianism. Stalin drove away Trotskii who had opposed to him, and became the utmost power holder of the entire Soviet Union succeeding to Lenin who led Russian Revolution. Stalin made Russia a powerful state. He set up `five-year-economic development plan`, and expanded heavy industry. But there were great sacrifices, and he also abused his power. He made secret police, and killed millions of people, or sent people to unrighteous labor camp. He purged all the people who were regarded to be obstacles to him.
I don`t think dictatorship is always absolutely bad thing. Some times, it is a necessary evil. As we look back the history, there were countless dictatorship governments, and some of them succeeded in making the nation rich and powerful. Some dictators have their own vision and ideal, and try hard to make them come true. To propel that actively and efficiently, probably dictatorship would be necessary, even if there is sacrifice. Just like Park Jung-hi. However, as most of the people know, if the dictator only tries to fulfill his greed and abuse his power, it is tragedy indeed. He would do all what he want and so many people would be killed just for one person. The nation would be just like a hell.
If I had an opportunity to rule a country, I might become a dictator. It`s not certain whether I could resist human`s instinctive greed. And most of the people are the same, I think. So, to make a country successful, the members of that country shouldn`t just depend on their leader. In the story, the animals just watched pigs who changed all seven commandments and took all the profits making plausible excuses. But people should not. They should be able to observe and criticize their leader. Of course it`s almost impossible that there would be another dictatorship in this country, but I`ve learned how important the people`s awareness is.
