Illusions : The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

For my homework project, I read a book called Illusions. It`s by Richard Bach.
What the story is about, is 2 men, who meet each other for the first time, act as if they`d been friends all along. The two men are named Don and Richard. Don is the reluctant messiah, as said by in the title. Both men are airplane ride givers. They ride village people for 10 minutes and get 3 dollars a ride.
When Richard first meets Don, Richard hears a bit of Don`s story, and wonders how come Don hasn`t any bugs on the windshield or oil or hay on the seats. He soon finds out. Soon, Don starts teaching Richard to do what Richard first believes to be miracles: walking on water, swimming in the land, making things float …(생략)

the end, Richard says something, the one thing that Don lived his life for. And then Richard mentions that it was obvious. The bottom line goes roughly like this: "It doesn`t matter whether I communicate or not." Don seems sad, then.
Soon, Richard "graduates", as a messiah. In about a week, Don is shot in the side by a man that once listened to Don on a radio show. Richard is sad to see him go, and knows that Don needn`t die, but realizes that he does. The very ending of this story is slightly surprising. It is something that no one would`ve expected. In the Messiah`s handbook that Don gave to Richard, the handbook that Richard believed in entirely, says, "Everything in this book may be wrong."
I personally think it`s a great story, with inspirational quotations that really gets me thinking. I also start thinking of the unnatural, about making things float and swimming in earth and going through walls. I realized, that though it was only in my fantasy that this was possible, I could do those things, too. Richard Bach`s book, Illusions, really taught me another way to look at life. A messiah`s way.


리차드 바크의 “일루션스”를 읽고서..

저는 숙제로 “일루션스”라는 책을 읽었습니다. 리처드 바크가 썼죠.
이 책 내용은 2남자가 서로를 처음 만났는데, 평생 친구였듯이 만나는 것으로 본격적으로 내용이 시작됩니다. 이 두 남자의 이름은 “돈”과 “리처드”이죠. 돈이 책제목의 마지못해하는 메시아이죠. 남자 둘 다 비행사이죠. 동네마다 날아다니면서 동네 사람들에게 10분에 3달라씩 받는 직업이죠.
리처드가 돈을 처음 만났을 때, 그는 돈에게 일어났던 이야기를 조금 듣게 되고, 어째서 와이퍼에 벌레가 없고, 기름이나 지푸라기가 좌석에 없는지 궁금해합니다. 곧 알게 되죠. 돈은 줄곧 리처드가 기적이라고 생각하는 것들을 가르쳐 준다: 물위에서 걷고, 토양 속에서 헤엄치고, 물건을 만들어 내는 것 같은 거 말이죠. 리처드는 자신이 이런 일을 할 수 있을 꺼라 믿습니다. 그 후 돈은 리처드에게 자기는 이 인생을 살게 된 이유가 아직 못배운 무언가를 배우려고 왔다고 설명하죠. 끝에서 리처드는 무언가를 말합니다. 내용은 대충 이렇죠: 내가 말을 하던 안 하던 상관없다.. 이죠. 돈은 이것이 바로 배우러 온 내용이라 말합니다. 리처드는 당연하지 않은 거냐고 물어봅니다. 돈은 곧 슬퍼 보입니다.
리처드는 메시아로서 “졸업”을 하게 됩니다. 한 일주일 정도 후, 돈은 옆구리에 총을 맞아 죽습니다. 며칠 전 라디오 방송을 시청하던 어떤 아저씨 에게요. 리처드는 돈을 보내야 하기 때문에 슬픕니다. 리처드는 돈이 꼭 죽어야 할 필요가 없다는 것을 알지만, 꼭 가야된다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 이 책의 마지막 부분은 아주 놀랍습니다. 절대 기대하고 있던 것이 아니라 서요. 리처드가 돈으로부터 받은, 절대적으로 믿고 있었던 메시아 마스터 편람에는 이렇게 써져있었죠: “이 책의 모든 내용은 틀릴 수가 있다.”
저는 개인적으로 이 책이 대단하다고 생각합니다. 절 정말 생각하게 만드는 인상적인 인용구들 때문이지요. 또, 불가능한 것에 대해서도 생각하게 됩니다: 물건을 공중에 나르게 하던지, 흙에서 헤엄치고 벽을 건너 걸어가는 행동에 대해서 말이죠. 전 깨 닫았죠, 저도 그런 행동을 할 수 있다는 것을, 물론 제 상상 속이지만 말이죠. 리처드 바크의 책, 일루션스, 은 인생을 되돌아 볼 수 있는 기회를 주었죠. 메시아의 방법으로 말이죠.
