A English book, The Giver reflects an ideal and fantasy world which has no conflict and doesn`t have to worry about money like a real utopia. However, there`s a restriction that we can`t have a right to enjoy our liberty and choices in any situation. If so, can we confidently say that it`s our ideal world that we expected and wanted? Though we can`t feel the emotion all we have, is it the very community? Surely, that`s not the one. In addition, even, we don`t regard people in that community as humans, but they`re puppet of The old. Even though, No matter how peaceful and feeling no anxiety about their community, if we can`t feel those delights authentically, we can`t appreciate it.
In this book, everything is controled such as emotions…(생략)

o babies, which has a destiny that they can`t foster them, just making the babies adopted to Nurturer. Of course, Jonas, Lilly and Gabe are adopted, too. Next, there are Nurturer which Jonas` father has and position at the Department of Justice in which Jonas` mom is prominent.
But, Jonas and Lilly don`t have jobs due to the fact that they did not fully age to be assigned. In this world, there are missions in each ages, and they have to carry our them. While they are doing, elders observe them and give proper assignments when the members age twelve-year-old. When Jonas are twelve, take the greatest and the highest assignment which is called "Giver". After that Jonas are trained to be Giver. One day, Jonas receive an special memory that father is staring, which is very shocking owing to fathers murdering. a terrible scene generates leaving of Jonas with Gabe. They undergo some adversities but they finally reached a novel and curious world.

As suggested in the end of the book, we can`t absolutely say that individuals who live in somewhat perfect community feel happy and convinced. Though the world is perfect and peaceful to live, if there isn`t any person who treat me as human, that society is governing us rather than perfect as if it comforts us. In this book, members in that world who can`t choose jobs; just assigned and considering that as it is are seemed they are the robot. Is it pertinent job which is assigned after observed under the supervision of others? it is myself that who knows me very much and specifically. Other people; in this book, the old surveyed me thoroughly though, they can`t watch inside of our mind. That someone conducts avoidable things cannot lead to like to do it. The assignment should be the thing that we can exert our interior power. In terms of that respect, the elder`s assigning may be the way the society works. Nevertheless, there is the thing that elders can`t do. That`s the control of emotion that Jonas has. When Jonas asked his father "do you love me?" The father told him "Jonas. You, of all people. Prescription of language, please."His kind and warm father can`t love him....... (p127) Is The Giver`s community solidity? isn`t it the scarecrow adorned with many accessories?
더 기버는 판타지적이고 이상적인 세계를 그리고 있다. 갈등도 하나도 없고, 돈에 대한 걱정도 하나도 없는 정말 유토피아적인 세계이지만, 그에 따른 선택과 자유의 권리를 거의 누리지 못한다.

이 책 속에는 여러 가지 직업이 존재하고 그 직업들을 elder가 개개인에게 부여해준다. 우선 아이들을 태어나게 해주는 birthmother가 있다. 과연 이것이 정말 우리가 바라는 이상의 세계인 것일까? 인간의 감정도 누릴 수 없는 세계 속에서 살아가는 생물이 과연 인간이라고 할 수 있는 것일까? 아무리 평화롭고 걱정 없는 세상이라고 할지라도 우리가 그것을 진정으로 느낄 수 없다면 평가할 수도 없을 것이다.

이 직업을 가진 사람들은 아기를 낳기만 하고 자기 자식들을 Nurturer에게 입양시켜야 하는 운명을 가지고 있다. Jonas, Lilly and Gabe도 Jonas의 아버지가 입양한 자식들이다. 그 다음으로는 Jonas의 아버지가 가지고 있는 Nurturer라는 직업이 있고 Jonas` mom held a prominent position at the Department of Justice.하지만, Jonas와 Lilly는 아직 12살이 되지 않았기 때문에 직업을 갖고 있지 않다. 이 세계에서는 각각의 나이마다 주어진 임무가 있고, 그 임무를 꼭 수행해야한다. 그 임무를 수행해가는 속에서 elder는 그 모습을 관찰하고 거기에 맞는 직업을 12살에 부여해준다. Jonas는 모든 임무를 훌륭하게 마쳐가며 점점 12살이 되어간다. 그러던 중, 드디어 12살의 생일을 맞은 Jonas는 여러 아이들과 함께 assignment를 받으러 간다. 모든 아이들의 직업이 부여되지만 Jonas의 이름은 불리지 않았다. 그렇게 마음을 졸이고 있던 중에 Jonas는 그 community에서 가장 높은 계급은 `the giver`가 된다. 직업을 부여받은 뒤로는 나이가 소용없게 된다. Jonas는 giver가 되기 위해 또 다른 giver에게 기억을 전수받게 된다. Jonas는 기억을 전달받는 receiver가 되어 전쟁의 고통, 사랑, 기쁨, 괴로움, 절망감 등 여러 가지 인간적인 감정을 전달받게 된다. 그러던 중, 쌍둥이를 release시키는 장면을 전달 받게 되는데, 그 곳엔 Jonas의 아버지가 있었다. Nurturer로만 알았던 아버지가 사실은 잘 자라지 않고 빈약한 아기를 죽이고 늙은 사람들을 죽이는 역할을 하는 사람이었던 것이었다. 충격에 빠진 Jonas는 그 community를 떠나기로 결심한다. Jonas 가족의 새로운 아이였던 Gabriel과 함께 탈출을 하게 된다. 새로운 세계를 떠나가던 도중 둘은 여러 가지 시련을 겪게 되지만 결국은 새로운 세계에 도착한다.

이 책의 결말에 나왔듯이 사회가 완벽하다고해서 꼭 사람들이 행복하게 산다고 말할 수 없다. 세상이 아무리 완벽하고 평화로워도 나를 인간의 감정으로서 대해줄 수 있는 사람이 없다면 그것은 완벽하다고 하기보단 완벽한 제어라고 해야 맞을 것이다. 직업을 직접 고를 수 없고 부여받을 수밖에 없는 현실에 적응하고 그것을 당연히 여기는 이 세계의 사람들은 정말 기계처럼 보였다. 남이 관찰하고 부여해주는 직업이 과연 정확한 것일까? 나 자신을 잘 아는 것은 그 누구보다 바로 나 자신이다. 남이 아무리 객관적으로 분석하고 관찰한다고 해도 내 마음속까지는 볼 수 없지 않은가? 어쩔 수 없이 수행해야하는 임무를 수행했다고 해서 그것을 좋아한다고 할 수는 없다. 직업은 자신이 바라고 자신의 자아를 실현할 수 있는 것을 선택해야한다. 그런 면에서 볼 때, elder의 직업 부여는 그저 사회를 돌아가게끔 하려는 하나의 방법이 아닐까 싶다. 이 책에서 가장 안쓰럽고 인상 깊었던 대목이 하나 있었다. 그것은 바로 Jonas가 “저를 사랑하시나요?”라고 물으니 그의 아버지가 “love라는 단어는 정확하지 않다. 정확한 단어를 말해라.”라고 대답한 부분이었다. 인자하고 다정한 아버지이나 자신을 사랑하지 않는 좋은 아버지....... The giver의 유토피아는 과연 속이 알찬 세계일까? 허울 좋은 모습으로 서 있는 허수아비의 세계가 아닐까?
