투르게네프의 첫사랑은 한 소년의 사랑을 통한 성장의 모습을 담고 있는 작품으로 주인공인 블라디미르가 자신에게 다가온 첫사랑의 이야기를 들려주는 구성으로 이루어져 있다. 주인공인 블라디미르에게 첫사랑은 인생의 첫 경험과도 같다. 무엇이든 처음으로 경험한다는 것은 긴장되고 기대되는 것이다. 특히 첫사랑은 기쁨과 행복감을 느끼게 해준다. 그러나 그의 첫사랑은 긍정적인 것만이 아니란 것을 알게 된다. 오히려 인생 최대의 아픔과 고통 절망을 안겨주는 결과를 낳게 되는 것이다. 존경하던 아버지와 목숨과 바꿀 수 있을 정도로 사랑한 지나이다로 부터의 배신감은 당시에 그에게는 열여섯 짧은 삶 중에 가장 큰 실연과 아픔이었을 것이다.
그에게 사랑을 알게 해주고 또한 배신감도 알게 해준 지나이다 역시 블라디미르와 같이 사랑에 의해 큰 아픔과 마음에 상처를 입었다. 이 두 인물을 통해 작가는 사랑을 통해 인간이 성숙해 질 수 있다는 것을 이야기 하는 듯하다. 사랑으로 인한 긍정적인 감정보다는 뼈를 깎는 듯한 마음의 아픔과 상처로 인한 감정이 사람의 정신적 성숙을 더욱 효과적으로 이룬다고 말하고 있는 것이다. 내가 보기에는 이 소설의 진정한 주인공은 블라디미르가 아닌 지나이다가 아닐까 하는 생각이 든다.
물론 투르게네프는 나가 겪은 첫사랑이야기를 쓴 거지만, 물론 투르게네프는 블라디미르가 겪은 첫사랑이야기를 쓴 거지만, 나는 책을 읽는동안 지나이다가 되어 이야기를 읽어갔다. 지나이다가 받는 관심과 사랑들에 대해 부러움도 느꼈다 나의 입장에서만 글을 썼다보니 지나이다가 주인공을 배신한 불량 소녀로 보일지도 모르겠지만, 그렇게 밖에 할 수 없었던 지나이다는 어땠을까? 첫사랑을 읽고 사랑에 대해 생각해 보았다. 사랑이란 한순간 아름답지만 곳 시들어버리는 장미꽃과 같은 것, 자신의 모든 것을 주는 것, 동물의 본성에 따라 그저 그 사람을 가지고 싶은 인간의 욕망이라는 것 이 3가지 말 중 그 어떤 것도 틀린 것이 없다. 한순간 불타오르는 뜨거운 감정이 사랑일수도 있고 자신의 모든 것을 주고도 또 주고 싶은 것이 사랑 일 수도 있고 그저 그 사람을 가지고 싶은 동물의 성욕을 인간이 합리화 시켜 사랑이라 부르는 것일 수도 있다. 하지만 남들이 사랑을 뭐라고 한들 자기 자신이 사랑이라고 믿는 것이 바로 사랑이라고 생각된다.
