개미 몇 달 전 우연히 이 책을 발견해서 읽게 되었다. 그때에도 작가에게 관심이 있던 것도 아니었기 때문에 책을 읽을 용기도 나지 않았다. 하지만 개미를 1권 읽고 났을 때는 책을 손에서 땔 수 없을 정도로 빠져있었다. 사실 내가 작가에 관심을 갖게 된 것도 이 책을 접하고 나서부터였다. 인간 이외의 존재가 인간을 관찰하는 내용들, 생각해보지도 못했던 새로운 이야기들이 개미에 담겨있었다. 사실 개미를 읽기 더욱 전에 읽었던 나무는 잘 이해가 되지 않았었다. 관심도 얼마 없었고 아니 그때까지만 해도 작가에 관해 아예 몰랐었기 때문에 나무라는 소설의 세계관을 이해하기에는 매우 오랜 시간이 걸렸다. 개미를 읽어보면 이 책이 매우 치밀하게 계산되어 있는 것처럼 느껴진다. 소설 속의 세상, 인간, 개미의 관계는 매우 복잡하게 얽혀있음에도 불구하고 서로 잘 이어진다. 개미는 일단 한 가정집의 인간들의 시점에서 시작한다. 그들은 지하실을 발견하게 되지만 가족의 유언 중 지하실에는 `절대 들어가면 안 된다`는 유언이 있어서 들어가지 않는다. 하지만 호기심으로 인해 들어가게 되고 그들은 단 한 명도 돌아오지 못했다. 그리고 나중에는 조사를 하러 들어간 경찰까지 지하실로 들어가서 나오지 못하자 더 이상 다른 사람들이 그 집에 들어가지 못하도록 아예 그 집을 봉쇄해 버린다. 그리고 소설의 시점은 개미의 시점으로 바뀐다. 처음에는 인간시점과 개미시점이 전혀 연관이 없는 것처럼 보이지만 결국 몇 십, 몇 백 쪽 또는 다른 권에서 연결이 된다. 소설의 초반부에서는 에드몽의 사망원인이 그가 숲을 산책하다가 말벌의 집을 건드려서 죽었다고 나온다. 개미와 말벌이 싸울 때 그는 개미를 도와주고 싶었지만 페로몬을 너무 많이 접촉했기 때문에 말벌에게 공격 당했다고 자세히 나와있다.
