(아마도 그때에는 어머니 역시 출세가 자기 아들이 갈 미래가 아님을 알고 아들의 용기있는 선택을 인정하게 된다.) 다른의미로 세상에서 힘이 가장 강한 어머니의 사랑이, 청소년기에 끝없이 방황하던 아들을 지켜주는 구실을 했을 것이다. 그 무한한 사랑으로 하여금 유준은 그 청소년기라는 긴 시간을 방황하더라도 자기만의 가치를 놓치지 않고 그것만은 지킨 것이다. 그가 여느 불량청소년들과 구분되는 확실한 한 가지가 있다. 그것은 바로 꾸준한 독서이다. 유준만이 아니라 그와 비슷하게 학교 밖의 친구들은 모두 숨은 독서광인 셈이다. 물론 그 중의 상당수가 유준과 비슷하게 작가지망생 내지는 문학청년들이기도 하다. 그러나 나름대로 자기에게 필요한 책을 찾아서 열심히 일고 있음을 확인 할수 있다.(여기서 책이란, 당연히 학교의 교과서와 참고서 그 이외의 책을 뜻한다.) 그 친구들도 역시 유준과 마찬가지로 거의가 실존인물을 모델로 삼고 있는데, 실제 현실 속의 그들은 정치.경제.사회.문화 등 각 분야에서 나름대로 업적을 이루고 있다는 것이 작가가 전하는 에필로그이다. 그동안 발표한 다른 소설에서 헌사를 거의 쓰지 않았던 작가는 책의 앞머리에 어머니에게 드리는 짧은 헌사를 적어두었다. “아들의 귀가를 기다리던 어머니께 이 책을 바칩니다” 아무리 청소년기에 어긋나고 흔들리더라도 책을 붙잡고 있는 한은 길을 잃지 않을 수도 있다는 생각이 들었다. 길을 잃기는 커녕 지금까지는 몰랐던 새로운 길을 찾을수도 있지 않을까?
