주인공인 소년은 청년으로 성장하며 사랑과 일에서 무수히 많은 환멸과 좌절을 맛보게 된다. 결국 지쳐버린 소년은 어느 날 갑자기 마음의 평화를 주고 진실 된 행복을 주는 유일한 방법인 ‘세상에서 가장 소중한 선물’을 늘 생각한다.
그리고 마침내 혼자 힘으로 그 선물이 무엇이며, 무엇을 의미하는지 깨닫는다.
그것은 믿기지 않을 만큼 평범하지만, 소년에게는 놀랍게도 위대한 선물인 것이었다. 나는 이 책을 읽고 나서 깨달은 바가 많았다.
나는 바로 지금 이 순간을 제대로 살아야겠다고 생각했다.
그 결과가 성공이든 행복이든, 심지어 실패와 불행일지라도, 그것을 향해 한 걸음이라도 내딛을 수 있는 때는 바로 지금뿐이니까 말이다. 우리는 내일을 앞당겨 쓸 수도, 어제를 다시 꺼내 쓸 수 없기 때문이다. 그래서 나는 오직 이 순간에 충실해야한다고 생각했다. 소년이 ‘바로 지금 이 순간이 가장 소중한 선물’이라는 사실을 깨닫는 순간, 소년의 미래와 과거 역시 힘들었던 지난날과는 다르게, 그 소년에게는 희망찬 새로운 세계로 다가 올 것이다.

계획은 미래와 현재를 이어주는 다리와도 같다.
과거에서 잘못을 깨닫지 못한다면 그 과거는 영원히 나의 발목을 잡을 것이다. 과거에 아픔을 겪었다면 바로 그 순간이야말로 배움을 얻어야 할 시간이 아닐까?
