제목:쉼표
이 책의 제목을 서점에서 처음 접했을 때 난 통상적으로 쉼표라는 단어가 주는 바쁜 일상에서의
여유로움. 휴식등을 생각했었다.
하지만, 프랑스에서는 쉼표라는 단어가 눈물이 많은 사람에서 붙여주는 별명인 모양이다.
" , " 의 모양이 눈물을 연상시켜서..... 우리나라의 수도꼭지라는 별명처럼....
이 책의 주인공 별명이 바로 쉼표이다.
아니 쉼표였다. 그는 지금 눈물이 말라버린 사람이 되어있다.
성장하면서 그는 눈물이 없어졌고 어떠한 감정에도 자신을 느끼도록 하지 못했다.
모든 것이 무감각인 사람.
그에게 삶은 놓쳐서는 안되는 꼭 힘을 주어 잡아야만 하는 끈이 아니었다.
오히려 삶의 끈이 저절로 끊어지길 바라고 있었는지도 모른다.
결국 그는 그 기회를 부모로부터 얻게 된다.
장미가시에 찔린 것이 염증으로 발전되고 의사들을 바꿔가면서까지 치료를 해보지만,
결국 어머니는 그것으로 죽음을 맞이하게 되고, 그런 어머니와 함께 동반자살을 선택한 아버지.
부모의 동반자살은 하나뿐인 아들에게 의사에 대한 복수의 마음을 불러 일으켰고,
결국 아들마저 조용한 죽음을 선택하게 한 계기가 되었다.
사랑하는 여인이 생겨 삶의 의미를 잠시 느끼기도 했었지만, 그는 그러한 삶의 끈마저 포기하고
예고된 죽음을 이행한다.
이해할 수 없는 인물이다. 정말로......
왜 그래야 했을까.

"어디로 갈지 모른다. 하지만, 난 돌진한다.
잠든 도시를 빠른 오토바이로 가로지르며 느낄 수 있는 것은 말로 표현할 수 없다.
자유, 아마 그걸 거다.
모든 걸 또 나를 잊기 위해, 더 이상 생각하지 않기 위해 난 달리고 또 달린다."
나를 잊음을 자유라 말하는 이 사람.
그에게 복수는 자살로 가기 위한 핑계에 불과했을 지 모른다.
그를 삶 속으로 끌어들일 수 있는 것이 이 세상에 존재하고 있을까.
그가 그것을 못찾은 거라면....... 우리가 그것을 찾아 그에게 준다면.....
그는 자살을 하지 않았을까...!!!

이러한 자기최면으로 그는 잠시 삶의 의미를 느끼게 해준 사랑이 찾아왔음에도,
끝내 그것을 거부하며 자신을 벼랑으로 몰았다.

가장 가치 있는 유일한 길이란 어디로든 인도하지 않는 길이다"
이 책을 읽다 보면 그에게 삶은 죽음으로 가기 위한 작은 역에 불과한 것 같다.
종착역까지 가기 위해선 다른 역에 잠시 내려 휴식을 취해서도 안되는........

역자후기에서 이 책의 번역을 맡은 장근상님은
이 책의 주인공을 "이방인"의 뫼르쏘에 비유하기도 했다.
그리고 저자는 프랑스의 유명한 판사이기도 한 에릭 알펜이란 사람으로 이 책은 바로 그의 처녀작이다.
에릭 알펜은 한국판 서문에서 이렇게 썼다.
한 남자의 이야기를 하고 싶었다고......
주인공에게는 없는 감동이 독자들에게는 생겨나도록 의도했다고....
저자는 책을 통해서 전하고 싶었던 말들을 반어법을 써 우리들에게 강조하고 싶었던 것은 아니었을지....
그가 창출해 낸, 이름도 없고 결점투성이인 주인공에 대해 같이 얘기할 수 있는 시간이 주어진다
면 그것은 그를 이해하는 것뿐만 아니라 나를 아는 계기도 될 것이라 생각된다.
나에겐 이 책의 주인공과는 달리 삶의 끈을 잡아야만 하는 이유가 분명히 있다.
그래서 내일 입을 옷을 자기 전에 준비하기도 하는 것이고 말이다.
하지만, 이 책의 주인공은 어제 입은 옷을 오늘 다시 입었고 오늘 입은 옷은 내일 다시 입는다.
내일에 대한 생각이 없는 그에겐 자살은 예고된 것이었지 모른다.
그에 대해 이해되지 않는 부분은 잠시 묻어두련다.
나를 포함해 우리들은 가끔 삶의 의미나 의의를 망각할 때가 있다.
그 시간들을 슬럼프. 또는 무력증. 권태라고 말하면 틀린 말일까?
하여간 살다가 이 책의 주인공이 하던 행동과 말을 무심코라도 내가 했다는 것을 자각하게 되면 그때 그를 떠올려 그 부분만 이해하련다.
그러다 보면 언젠간 그를 전부는 아니더라도 조금은 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
하지만, 다른 마음 한편에선 그를 이해하고 싶지 않는 마음도 적지 않게 작용하고 있다.
나는 죽음을 생각하지 않으니까...
그것이 자유로 가는 길은 아니니까....
