세상에 잠깐 다녀간 흔적만이 남아 있는 그리운 아버지를 생각하며 김정현 작의 『아버지』란 책장을 넘겨본다.
한정수. 그는 중년을 맞이하는 길목에서 췌장암 말기라는 사형선고를 받는다. 얼마 남지 않은 시간이기에 집안의 가장이란 이유로 남은 가족들을 위해 끝까지 헌신을 하며 가족에게조차 알리지 않고 서서히 이별을 준비한다. 제일 먼저 알려야 하는 아내에게조차 알리지 않으려는 아버지란 존재는 어떤 힘에 눌려 끝까지 강인함을 보여야 하는 것일까.
지난 날 내 아버지 당신도 그랬다. 가족들이 없는 사이에 고통을 받아야 했고, 아무도 없는 텅 빈 집안의 방바닥을 등지고 아픔을 참아야 했던 지난날을 생각하면 지금도 가슴이 뭉클하다. 항상 병석에만 누워 계시는 당신의 모습이 싫었고, 초라했던 모습이 부끄럽고 힘없는 당신의 모습이 원망스러워 결혼이란 이유로 도망을 쳐야 했던 지난날의 모습은 가슴속 깊이 후회스러웠다.
언제나 같이 있는 가족에게는 아버지란 모습은 항상 당당하며 빈틈없고, 모든 일에 철저히 완벽하기만을 바라는 마음은 모든 이들도 동감할 것이다. 그러나, 혼자 맞이하는 죽음, 누구 하나 동행이 되지 않은 그 길에 힘들고 고통스러움에 몸이 지쳐도 남아 있는 가족을 위해서는 끝까지 최선을 다하는 모습에 가족의 이해를 바라는 마음이지만, 늘 외롭다는 생각이 들 때면 친구인 남신우 박사만이 그의 곁을 떠나지 않았고 그에게 고통을 호소하며 술이라고 취해 버려 자신이 외로움을 달래려 한다.
하지만 매일 매일 술에 취해 비틀거리는 모습, 흔들리는 아버지 당신에게는 완벽함을 바라는 가족이기에 아버지의 흐트러지는 모습을 이기적인 자신들의 자존심 때문에 그런 아버지의 모습을 거부하듯 멀리한다.
가족의 냉대함이 외로움에 지쳐버린 한정수, 지금까지 최선을 다하며 앞만 보고 가족에게 헌신하며 빈틈없이 살아온 시간이기에 그 무엇인가 자신의 모습을 찾으려고 하는 어느 날 아내 아닌 다른 여인에게서 따뜻한 정과 그리운 사람의 정을 한정수 그에 대한 배려와 편안한 사랑과 함께 잠시나마 가슴 따뜻한 연민의 정을 느낀다.
도대체 가족이란 무엇일까. 왜 그렇게 제일 초라한 모습을 가족이란 울타리에서 보이지 않으려는 마음의 장벽이 무엇일까 나는 생각한다. 같이 있고 같은 지붕 아래 둥지를 틀고 사는 가족이기에 같이 어우러져 사는 동반자이며 초라한 모습을 보여 주어도 용서하고 받아들이며 사랑해야 하는 것인데, 왜, 왜 그렇게 아버지란 존재는 무겁고 힘든 짐을 혼자 져야만 하는 것인지. 이 글을 읽으며 가끔은 치밀어 오르는 분노를 견딜 수가 없어 눈가에 눈물이 맺힌다.
그렇게 하루하루 지나가는 짧은 시간에 어느덧 고통에 몸부림치며 그 고통을 참아내려고 진통제로 아픔을 참고 지내고 있으니 얼마 남지 않은 시간을 한정수 본인은 느끼면서도 가족에게만큼은 그 아픔을 보이지 않으며 혼자서 견뎌낸다.
그러한 그의 고통을 알고 있는 남신우 박사는 한정수의 아내에게 남편의 병을 알리며 얼마 남지 않은 시간을 정리하라고 이야기한다. 그제야 지난날 자신의 냉대함에 후회하며 남편의 외로움을 달래려 남은 시간을 짧게 여행도 하며 자식들에게 아버지에 대한 추억거리를 만들려 노력하지만 그 모든 것이 무슨 의미이며 누구에 대한 기억이며, 누구에 대한 추억이란 말인가.
그 긴 시간을 위로하며 같이 해야 하는 시간에 그들은 냉대함과 자신의 욕망만 추구해 놓고서 이제 와서 얼마 남지 않은 시간에 자신들의 끝없는 욕심만 채울 뿐 같이 동행하는 길도 아니면서 동반자로 아들딸로서 늘 바라는 마음밖에 없었으면서도 가족이란 이유 때문에 자신들밖에 모르는 이기적인 삶을 살려고 몸부림치는 것인지 때로는 화가 나며 지난날의 내 자신에 대해 채찍질한다.
같이 사는 시간에 길다면 길고 짧다면 짧은 시간인데 왜 조그마한 것에도 짜증을 내며 얼굴을 붉히며 살아가는 것인지. 잠깐 왔다가 흔적만이 남는 것인지 인간이란 자기 자신의 만족을 위하여 살아가는 것 같다.
한정수. 그도 어느덧 죽음의 시간을 맞이해야 하는 길목에서 빈손으로 왔다가 빈손으로 가는 길목에서 살아있는 날에 대한 감사함에 남아 있는 그 누군가를 위해 또 다시 자신의 몸을 헌신하며, 장기 기증을 택하였다. 이 세상을 아니, 남아 있는 사랑하는 가족과 이별을 맞이하며 아름다운 그만의 세상으로 떠난다.
죽음 앞에 끝까지 사랑하는 가족을 위해 자신의 한 몸을 바치며 살아가는 아버지. 가정의 울타리란 그 짐을 혼자서 지며 살아가는 내 아버지를 다시 생각할 수 있는 마음을 갖게 해 주는 『아버지』란 책을 모든 분들에게 권하고 싶다.
