도서관에서 서적을 찾다가 우연히 책을 찾았다. 두껍지도 않은 그렇다고 얇지도 않은 책에 나온 미술자료에 시선이 끌려 잠시 읽게 되었다. 알기 쉬운 미술 감상의 길잡이라는 책의 제목에서 보는바와 같이 독자들로 하여금 미술이란 알기 쉬운 것이라고 머리말부터 풀어 써내고 있다. 이 책에서 비주류에 속하는 작품을 다루고 있지만 주요 미술가들과 일반적으로 걸작이라고 인정받고 있는 작품들을 주로 다루고 있다. 그 이유는 그 작품들이 사람들에게 친숙하게 알려져 있어 독자들에게 이해하기 편하게 하기 위해서라고 한다. ‘현대미술의 이해를 위하여‘라는 부재로 시작하는 이 책은 우리는 때때로 미술이 아주 생소한 언어처럼 보이는 시대에 살고 있다고 이 작가는 말한다. 그 이유는 이렇다. 사람들은 각박한 시대에 살고 있으며 혼란스러운 시대에 살고 있으며 기계적인 반복과 기술에 화가 나서 예술은 나도 할 수 있겠다고 생각하기 때문이라고 한다. 또한 미술은 비교적 변화가 적고 동일성을 지닌 집단 내에서 그 집단의 고유한 성격을 뛰는데 현대사회는 예전의 선조들에게 물려받은 일관되고 안정된 문화를 소유하고 있지 않아 누구나 이해할 수 있는 미술을 창조할 가능성이 줄어든다고 말하고 있다. 그 이유인즉 역시 각박한 세상 속에 살게 됨으로서 인간이 추구하는 문화와 예술적 가치가 그저 상업성에 지나지 않으며 단지 교육 자료의 성격을 띠는 매체가 되어버릴 가능성이 많아져 버린 것에 있다고 나는 생각한다. 이 책에선 ‘작품의 의미를 찾아서’ ‘물질적 특성’ ‘색채의 형태’ ‘감상자의 시각’ ‘작품제작의 동기’ ‘작가들은 왜 작품을 제작 하는가’ ‘아이디어를 다루는 방법’ 등 여러 가지 부재들로 하여금 나를 까다로운 예술시각을 가지게 하고 있다. 물론 ‘폴 세잔’ ‘앙리 마티스’ ‘반 고흐’ ‘피카소’ 등등 여러 작가들의 작품을 예로 하여금 책의 내용을 이해시키기 위해 인용하여 적절한 예를 들어주고 있다. 이 책을 읽고 난후 내가 생각하는 바로는 사람들은 어느 작품이 좋고 어느 작품이 작품의 가치가 떨어지는가 하는 그런 생각들을 한다. 나조차 그런 생각을 가지고 살아가고 있다. 하지만 가치의 변화와 생각의 변화를 가지고 좀 더 작품에 임하는 방법을 가지면 오히려 나에게 좀 더 낳은 작품을 하면서 살아갈 수 있지 않을까하는 생각을 하게 된다.
