어린왕자
영어 영작 숙제를 하기 위해서 책을 폈다. 어린 왕자는 내가 전에도 읽어본 적이 있었던 책이기 때문에 대충 한번 다시 읽어보고 쓰려고 했다. 그러나 몇 년만에 다시 읽으려고 하니 잘 생각이 나지 않았다. 그래서 새로운 마음으로 처음부터 다시 읽어보려고 마음먹었다. 책을 펴자 처음에서는 셍텍쥐베리가 그린 어린 왕자의 그림이 인상적이었다. 읽다보니 어린 왕자의 순수하고 넓은 상상력이 나를 이끌었다. 하지만 어린 왕자의 주장을 반박하고 싶은 부분도 여러 군데 있었다. 모든 사람들은 보는 눈이 다르다. 그림에서 ‘무제’라는 제목의 그림이 많은 것도 보는 사람이 보고 느끼는 그대로가 그 그림의 주제이니 그림을 보면서 자기 나름대로의 이름을 지어보라는 의미일 것이다. 그런데 왕자는 보이지 않는 것도 사랑할 줄 알면서 왜 자신과 의견이 다른 사람은 모두 순수하지 못하다고 생각하는 것일까? 이 책을 읽은 사람에게 코끼리를 소화하는 보아 구렁이 그림을 그려주면 이 책을 읽지 않은 사람은 대다수가 모자라고 혹은 다른 이야기를 말할 것이다. 그러면 이 책을 읽지 않은 사람은 모두 상상력이 없는 사람이 되고 만다는 논리인데 그것은 별로 일반적이지 못한 논리라고 생각된다. 어린 왕자는 소혹성 B612에서 산다. 항상 투덜대는 장미와 뽑지 않으면 언제 커서 자신의 별을 집어삼킬지 모르는 작은 바오밥 나무들, 불을 뿜어대는 그렇지만 물을 끓일 정도밖에 되지 않는 활화산과 한 개의 사화산과 함께. 여기서 장미는 큰 역할을 한다. 어린 왕자가 다른 사람의 마음을 알게 되는 동기가 되는 것이 장미이기 때문이다. 장미는 하찮은 꾀를 부려 왕자의 마음을 아프게 하지만 그건 결국 사랑의 표현이었다는 것을 왕자는 장미와 함께 있을 때는 알지 못한다. 바람막이를 가져다 달라고도 하고, 유리 덮개를 해 달라고도 하고 왕자를 귀찮게 했지만 장미는 왕자를 사랑해서 그런 것이었다. 그러나 그 별에서는 장미의 진심을 알지 못했다. 그리고 홀로 먼 곳을 여행하면서 장미의 마음을 이해하고 장미의 외로움을 생각한다. 첫 번째 별에 있는 왕은 권위적인 인간과 복종에 대해 이야기하고 있으며, 생쥐 한 마리밖에 살지 않는 곳에서 그 쥐를 재판하는 왕의 모습을 통해 우리 인간의 모습을 보여주는 것 같았다. 두 번째 별에 나오는 허영 꾼 은 자기 자신에게 칭찬과 박수를 보내주기만을 기대하는 속이 텅 빈 이기주의를 표현하고 있다. 세 번째 별에 사는 술꾼은 목적의식 없는 방관자 또는 염세주의자들을 상징하고 있으며 술 마시는 것이 부끄러워 술을 마신다는 엉뚱한 말로 나를 당황시켰던 부분이기도 하다. 다음별의 상인은 요즘 늘어만 가는 물질 만능주의를, 가로등을 켜는 사람은 기계처럼 자신이 하는 일에 대한 자부심이나 의욕감 없이 일만 열심히 하는 사람을 나타내고 있다. 그러나 왕자는 그래도 이 사람을 가장 좋아한다. 자기 자신의 일이 아니라 다른 일에 전념하고 있기 때문이라고 했다. 그 다음별 또한 자신의 상상력 없이 남이 해놓은 것을 기록하려고만 하는 사람인 지리학자밖에 없어 왕자는 실망을 한다. 이러한 별들을 여행하면서 어린 왕자는 “어른들은 정말 이상하다.”라는 말을 남기고 떠난다. 어쩌면 이 글을 읽는 어른들이 가장 깊이 느껴야 할 부분이라고 생각한다. 어린 자식이나 조카 등을 곁에 두고 살면서 ‘내 주위의 아이들도 저렇게 생각할까?’ 하는 생각을 어른들은 얼마나 해 보는지 모르겠다. 어린 왕자는 사막에 불시착한 ‘나’와 만나게 된다. 비행기 고장으로 사막에 홀로 남겨진 ‘나’와 까다로운 장미를 떠나 여기까지 온 왕자는 서로를 만나서 서로를 조금씩 알게 된다. 항상 많은 질문을 던져 오지만 정작 ‘나’의 질문에 대한 답은 해주지 않는 왕자. 침묵에서 느껴지는 소중한 무언가를 전하려고 하는 왕자. 이런 왕자와 `나`는 참된 우정을 서로 느끼게 된다. 이 책에서 중요하다고 생각되는 21장 중에서 내가 가장 좋아하는 구절은 “네가 오후4시에 온다면 난 3시부터 벌써 행복하기 시작할거야. 시간이 지날수록 나는 점점 행복을 느낄 거야. 4시가 되면 벌써 안절부절을 못하고 걱정이 될 거야...”라고 말하는 부분이다. 처음부터 갑자기 다가서는 것보다 기다림을 가지고 천천히 조금씩 다가와서 길들인다는 여우의 말도 우리가 너무 쉽게 만나고 헤어지는 것을 꼬집어 주려고 한 것 같다. 그리고 내가 길들인 것에 대해서 책임을 져야 한다는 말이 나온다. 모두가 서로를 사랑하며 소중히 여기는 삶을 말하는 것이리라. 서로를 길들인다는 것을 알게 된 왕자는 자신이 길들인, 길들여진 장미를 생각하고 책임을 위해서 ‘나’와 이별을 다짐한다. 왕자는 결국 마지막 모습을 ‘나’에게 보이지 않은 채 떠난다. 죽은 듯이 보이지만 죽은 게 아니고 멀고 험한 길을 무거운 몸을 이끌고 가지 못해 순수한 자신의 마음만 가지고 가는 왕자의 마지막 모습과 함께 왕자가 남긴 말은 내 가슴속에 남아있다. 나는 항상 이러한 마음을 가지고 살아갈 것이다.
