나는 이 책을 친구의 권유로 읽게 되었다. 처음 이책의 제목만 보았을때는 로빈슨 크루소와 같은 표류기인 줄 알았다. 하지만 책을 읽어갈수록 이 책은 그런 영웅담이나 모험담이 아니라는 것을 알 수 있었다.
고래잡이배 에식스호의 조난은 타이타닉호의 침몰에 버금가는 19세기의 해양 참사였다. 허먼 멜빌은 에식스호 사건에서 영감을 받아 미국문학 최대의 걸작으로 평가받는??백경??을썼다. ??백경??의 결말은 선장의 죽음이지만, [바다 한가운데서]는 에식스호 침몰 후 시작된 선원들의 죽음과 생존자들의 삶을 향한 표류를 논픽션으로 썼다. 바다와 싸우는 표류자들이 굶주림과 갈등, 질병과 공포로 인육까지 먹으면서 생존을 위해 사투하는 과정이 처절하다.
