영어영작 - 왕자와 거지를 읽은후... 왕자와 거지

`왕자와 거지`를 읽고
내가 어렸을 때도 재밌게 읽던 마크 트웨인 작의 `왕자와 거지`. 하지만 영어판으로 읽으니까 느낌이 확연히 달랐다. 솔직히 말하면 해석하는 데도 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸기 때문이다. 힘들게 읽긴 했지만, 한글로 된 동화로 읽는 것 보다 좀 더 유익하고 즐거웠던 시간으로 이 책을 읽을 수가 있었다. 모두가 알고 있겠지만, `왕자와 거지`의 줄거리는 이렇다.
옛 영국 런던의 오펄 가에 톰과 그 가족들, 자세히 말하자면 세 남매와 그의 어머니 그리고 아버지가 살고 있었다. 톰 캔티는 언제나 돈을 벌어오지 못했다고 아버지에게 꾸중을 든다. 가족들을 위해 돈을 벌지도 않으면서 어린 아들을 돈을 버는데 이용하고 구박하는 톰 캔티의 아버지인 존 캔티가 너무 얄밉고 나를 화나게 하기도 한다. 만약 내가 톰이었다면 가출 등의 집을 빠져나가려는 노력을 했었을 텐데, 꿋꿋하게 잘 버텨내는 톰의 참을성이 부럽기도 하였…(생략)

고 있던 톰은 왕자와 오해를 받는다. 아무리 자기가 미천한 거지라고 하여도 아무도 믿어주질 않는다.
에드워드 왕자는 톰의 아버지 존 캔티와 왕초한테 끌려 다니며 구박을 받는 동안, 왕궁의 화려함과는 너무 틀린 밑바닥 인생이 있다는 사실을 알게 된다. 그리고 그들이 가난하게 살게 된 원인이 잘못된 정치 때문이라는 사실도 알게된다. 훌륭한 왕이라고 생각했던 아버지 헨리 8세는 전쟁을 일삼고 과중한 세금으로 국민을 괴롭히는 왕이었던 것이다. 많은 것을 깨달은 에드워드는 다시 왕자의 신분을 되찾으려고 노력하지만 거지들한테 놀림만 받을 뿐... 그때 마일즈 기사를 만나게 됩니다. 마일즈 역시 에드워드를 왕자라 믿지 않는다. 다만 캔티한테 구박 당하는 것이 불쌍해 도와주는 입장일 뿐이다. 그러던 어느 날 왕이 죽게 되고 왕자의 왕위계승 소식이 전해진다. 톰이 왕위에 오른다는 소식이었다.
왕위계승일 날 에드워드 왕자와 마일즈가 왕궁으로 급히 향합니다. 드디어 톰의 머리에 왕관이 씌어지려는 순간, 에드워드가 경비병을 따돌리고 들어선다.

장내는 잠시 혼란이 생기고... 욕심이 없던 톰이 에드워드를 반긴다. 그래도 신하들이 믿지 않자, 옥새가 숨겨진 위치를 톰의 도움으로 정확히 말하자 그렇게 긴 고난의 시간이 지나고 에드워드는 왕위에 오르고, 거지 시절, 배고프고 불쌍한 삶을 직접 보고 경험했던 에드워드는 서민을 위해 좋은 정치를 펼 것을 약속한다.
어렸을 때 아무런 생각 없이 책을 덮은 후, 나는 이 책을 좋은 기회로 한 번 더 읽은 뒤, 여러 가지 깨달은 점이 있다. 읽는 도중 그런 부귀영화를 버리고 거지의 자유로움을 동경한 왕자의 모습이 좀 황당했지만, 지금 생각해보면 왕자의 모습을 통해 진짜 행복은 부, 명예 등 모든 사람들이 부러워하는 부귀영화가 행복의 전부가 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 해준다. 또 한편으로는 시험 같은 답답한 현실에 갇힌 우리와는 달리 자유로운 생활의 거지가 부럽기도 하였다. 왕자가 되지 못했지만, 결코 톰은 슬퍼하지 않을 거라고 생각한다. 아니 오히려 자신의 자유로움을 감사하게 여길 것이다. 또한, 권력자가 실천해야 할 의무를 보여주고 있다. 권력자는 절대로 약자를 괴롭히지 말아야 하며, 약자를 푸대접해서는 안 된다. 약자를 괴롭히는 것은 약자가 약자를 괴롭히는 것이라는 속담이 있지 않은가? 우리는 서로가 공평하게 살아가야 한다는 것을 일깨워 주는 이 시대의 동화라고 생각한다.
