나는 바른 행동으로 부하들에게도 모범을 보였던 그의 인간성에 감동을 받았다.
비리에 편승하지 않고 그릇된 일은 용서치 않았던 그의 의연한 성품은 현대 한국인들에게 좋은 귀감이 될 것이다.
그리고 지도자의 권위의식을 드러내지 않고 부하들과 생활을 같이 했던 그의 태도도 훌륭하다고 생각한다. 특히 높은 관직에 있는 지도자들은 자신의 유리한 입지를 악용하여 부정한 이익을 취할 때도 있는데 그는 그렇지 않았다.
나는 그가 성웅으로 칭송받는 것도 이 때문이라고 생각한다.
그러나 본래 강직한 성품인데다가 부정과 비리를 몰랐던 그는 자신의 명성을 시기하고 모함하던 무리들이 꽤 많았다고 한다.
나는 그런 사람들에게 이렇게 묻고 싶다. “나라에 위기가 오면 싸울 사람들이 있을까?” 이순신장군은 결국 그 모함으로 인해서 감옥에도 들어갔으나 그의 결백이 증명되고 등용되어 패배한 전쟁을 큰 승리로 이끌었다. 그리고 획기적이면서도 독창적인 거북선을 만들었다. 이 거북선은 일본 수군을 소탕하는데 혁혁한 공을 세운 숨은 인재이기도 할 것이다.
아마 한국인들에게 이순신 장군만큼 잘 알려진 역사적 인물은 없을 것이다.
교과서에 자주 거론되었을 뿐만 아니라, 곳곳에 동상도 많이 세워져 있기 때문이다. 그러나 너무 쉽게 접하다 보면, 오히려 소홀히 여기게 되고 관심도 희박해지기 마련이다. 따라서 이순신장군을 교과서나 역사책의 전설적인 인물로만 생각해서는 안 된다고 생각한다. 그들의 위대한 업적과 함께 청렴결백한 인간성도 함께 강조하여 우리 국민들이 직접 자기 생활 속에서 실천해 나가는 자세를 갖게 하는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다.
