<작은 아씨들 영어독후감>
- 영어로 읽는 세계명작 ??작은 아씨들??을 읽고... 학교에서 방학숙제로 영어 독후감 쓰기 숙제를 내 주셨다. 처음에는 ??안그래도 영어 못하는데 영어로 독후감까지 쓰라고 하시나..?? 하는 생각이 들었다. 게다가, ??책 4권을 소개해 주면서 4개중에 하나 골라 써 와라...?? 하니 더욱 할말을 읽고, 또 그 책들 4권이라고 하는 것이 등급별 선정도서였다. 책 사라고 하는 것까지는 문제가 되지 않았건만 도대체 어떻게 영어로 독후감을 쓰냐는 말인지 도무지 답이 나오지 않았다. 우선 한권만 사면 후회할 것 같은 예감이 들어 책 4권을 몽땅 샀다. 그런데.. 집에 오자마자 학교에서 산 책들을 펼쳐보니 눈 앞이 어질어질... 방학도 여간 짧지가 않은데 이 많은 숙제들을 어떻게 다 해낼까 걱정도 되었다. 그렇지만 나는 자랑스런 60억의 인구수를 자랑하는 인간이란 종족…(생략) 초등학생이었을 때는 잘만 떵떵대며 들어가던 어린이 실이 중 2가 되어 찾아와 문을 열려니 웬지 모를 무안함이 밀려왔다.
도서관에는 정말 아이들이 많았다. 방학이라서 그런지 책을 읽으려고 다들 오는 것 같기도 하고... 생각해 보면 내가 초등학교 다닐 때에도 6년 내내 공통적으로 들어갔던 방학숙제로 독후감 쓰기가 빠지지 않았던 것 같다. 북적대는 아이들 속에서 천천히 왔다갔다 거리며 서고를 뒤져봐도 ??작은아씨들??이 보이지 않았다. 결국 사서선생님께 찾아달라고 부탁을 드렸더니만 내게 ??학생, 중학생이지? 여기는 애들 오는데야. 작은 아씨들이 있긴 있는데, 애들이 보는 거라 내용도 짧구 해서 중학생이 보기엔 적당하지 않으니까 여기서 나가서 왼쪽에 있는 제 2자료실로 가봐, 보통 중학생들 다 거기로 가더라...?? 라고 하셨다. 아니! 쪽팔림을 무릅쓰고 어린이 실에 들어간 보람도 없이 일이 어떻게 이렇게 돌아갈 수가 있냐는 말이다!!! 그래서 하는 수 없이 제 2자료실에 찾아갔다. 솔직히 말해 나도 엄연한 중학생, 내가 괜히 어린이 실을 찾아갔겠냐고 묻는다면 이렇게 대답하겠다. 제 2자료실, 나도 사서선생님 말씀에 의한 ??보통 중학생?? 이라 너무나 자주 들락날락 거려봐서 잘 알지만 동화책 같은 건 눈에 뵈지도 않았다. 그래도 있다고 말씀하시니 찾아는 보았지만 보이지 않았다. 그래서 이번에도 도움을 받아야 겠다는 생각에 제 2자료실 사서선생님께 부탁을 드렸다. ??어, 좀 오래된 책인데... 학생, 좀 기다려봐?? 하며 어디론가 가시더니 선생님 말대로 정~말 오래된 책을 가지고 오셨다. 얼마나 오래되었는지 누렇게 바래가지고는 제책방식부터가 차이가 나는 것이 우리가 지금 읽고 있는 책은 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로 넘기는 방식인데 사서선생님께서 찾아주신 그 책은 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로 넘기는 방식이었고 지금 책이 가로로 읽게 되어 있다면, 그 책은 세로로 읽게 되어 있었다. 게다가 내가 영어보다 더 싫어하는(참고로 영어를 싫어하지는 않는다) 한문이 뒤섞여 있는 말 그대로 옛날 책!! 혹시나 해서 책 뒤편을 펴보았더니 발향년도가 1978년도 였다. 책은 한글 번역본(?) 이나 영어책 둘 다 세트로 어질어질하기는 마찬가지였다. 한자가 섞인 한글 책, 그리고 영어책.. 눈동자가 뱅글뱅글 돌아가도록, 심지어는 현기증이 나도록 이 두 책을 대조해 가며 읽어가는 고통을 나말고 또 누가 알지.. (많이 알 것이다. 왜냐고?? 참고로 이 숙제는 전교생 공통과제임) 게다가 도서관 자료실은 사람을 편하게 숙제하도록 도와주는 공간이 못 되었다. 책을 읽는 중에도 은근히 다른 학생들이 책을 찾으러 오는 눈치였다. 나는 모른 척 하고 슬쩍 버텨보긴 했지만 양심에 찔려 도서관 의자에 오래 앉아 있기가 매우 힘이 들었다. 그렇잖아도 몇 장 읽다가 말았는데 하는 수 없이 반납하고 쫒겨나다 시피 도서관을 나왔다. 이번엔 서점이다! 하고 신호등 앞 버스정류장으로 갔다. 할 수 없이 서점에서라도 책을 구해야지 하는 생각에 교보문고에 가기로 결심한 것이다. 무슨 놈의 버스는 느리 터져가지고 이렇게 안 오는 건지 버스 기다리느라 10분 이상은 써먹은 것 같다. 버스 개편 전에는 2, 3분이면 금방 왔었는데... 교보문고에 도착해 소설 코너로 가서 ??작은 아씨들??을 찾았다. 그러나 이 많은 책 들 중에 그 책 한 권이 쉽게 눈에 띌 리는 없었다. 게다가 눈까지 아파왔다. 안 그래도 쨍쨍하게 더운 날, 강렬하게 내 머리 끝을 정면으로 강렬하게 비쳐오는 태양 빛과 점심도 부실하게 먹은 주제에 집에도 들어가지 않고 학원과 도서관과 시 내를 돌아다닌 것이 그 원인인 것 같았다. 여하튼 책은 잘 구했다. 검색대 앞을 거의 장악해 가며 뒷사람 기다리는 것도 아는 지 모르는 지도 모르게 느릿느릿하게 책 제목을 적고있는 아줌마 덕택에 귀찮게 책을 찾다가 결국엔 직원의 부탁을 받게 된 일과 집으로 돌아오는 버스 안에서 어떤 아저씨와 아줌마 둘이 자리 없으니까 나한테 보낸 눈총에 뜨끔해서 자리를 양보하다가 손에 쥐고 있던 8700원이나 남은 버스카드를 잃어버리고 온 일, 그리고 미술학원에 가는 것을 포기한 일 밖에 그다지 어려운 건 없었다 (참고로 성격은 좋지 않다) 집으로 돌아와서 책을 다시 대조해 가며 읽었다. 고생한 보람이 있는 듯 책의 내용을 오랜만에 보니까 감회가 새로웠다. ??작은아씨들??의 이야기는 마치 가문의 네 명의 자매들을 주인공을 중심으로 이루어 지는 이야기였다. 첫째, 마가렛, 둘째, 조세핀, 셋째 엘리자베스, 넷째, 에이미 이렇게 작은 소녀의 이야기는 네 자매 주인공들의 따뜻하고 포근한, 때로는 어려움을 이겨내 가며 살아가는 아름다운 이야기가 펼쳐진다. 신기하게도 네 자매들의 성격은 하나같이 모두 다르다. 16살인 첫째언니 마가렛, 애칭 메그는 자존심이 강하고 가끔은 사치스럽고 부유한 생활을 동경하는 일반 소녀형이지만 동생들에게는 따뜻하고 친절한 맏 언니의 역할에 알맞은 성격을 지니고 있다. 15살인 둘째 조세핀은 남자같이 털털한 성격에 책 읽기를 좋아하고, 성격이 급하며 남자들이 하는 말투와 놀이를 즐겨 자신이 여자라는 데에 대한 불만이 매우 많은 편이다. 게다가 여자가 여자다운 구석이 없이 키가 껑충 크고 깡마르게 생겨 약간 밉상스럽다. 그래서 식구들은 그녀의 불만을 조금이나마 풀어주기 위해 애칭을 남자같이 ??조??라고 부르고 있었다. 정말로 조는 어린 동생들에게는 거의 오빠같은 역할을 하고 있었지만 전쟁에 나가신 아버지의 바람 대로 ??리틀 우먼??이 되기 위해 노력하게 된다. 그렇지만 그런 조에게도 한 가지 좋은 재주가 있다면 글 쓰기 이다. 그녀의 탁월한 글 쓰기 능력으로 인해 신문사에 조세핀 마치라는 이름으로 소설까지 실렸던 경우도 있었다. 셋째, 엘리자베스는 14살이고 애칭은 베스이다. 그런데 베스는 바로 위의 언니 조와는 정반대로 매우 소극적인 성격을 지니고 있다. 동물을 사랑하고 헌 인형이라도 제 몸처럼 아끼며 피아노 치는 것을 좋아하지만 너무나 소극적인 성격 때문에 밖으로 나가는 일이 거의 없다. 그러면서도 둘째언니와는 이상하게도 사이가 좋아 자신의 고민을 아낌없이 털어놓는 모습을 보인다. 넷째 에이미는 무척이나 세침데기에 어찌보면 얌체같아서 허영심도 많고, 질투심도 많고 여자답지 못한 것을 매우 싫어해 조와 자주 트러블이 일어난다. 어느 날은 조와 싸우다가 큰 일이 날 뻔한 적도 있었다. 그렇지만 열 살의 수준을 넘지 못하는 실정이라 그리 밉게 보이지는 않다. 그림 그리는 것을 좋아한다. 모두들 개성적인 성격을 지니고 있지만 서로를 아껴주며 사랑하며 사이좋게 살아갈 수 있는 건 자매가의 우애가 두텁고 아버지가 전쟁터에 나가 어려운 상황에서도 빛을 발하는 인내심과 고된 역경을 참고 견뎌가며 함께 싸워갈 수 있는 똘똘 뭉쳐진 마음을 가지고 있기 때문인 게 아닌 가 싶다. 작은 아씨들의 내용은 이렇다. 마치가에는 마치 부인과 네 명의 자매들, 그리고 가정부인 한나가 살고 있었다. 그리고 아버지인 마치 씨는 전쟁터에 나가는 상황에서 형편없고 가진 것 없는 크리스마스를 보내게 된 네 명의 자매들은 서로 불평을 하면서도 강한 마음으로 새 해를 시작하자는 마음을 먹게 된다. 일년을 지내면서 마치가의 네명의 아가씨들에게는 많은 일들이 일어났다. 옆집의 으리으리한 저택 로렌스가에 살고있는 할아버지와 로리라는 소년과 친구가 되는 일도 있었고, 자매끼리 서로 싸우기도 하고 베스가 성일홍에 걸려 위급했던 일, 아버지가 위중한 병에 걸렸다는 소식에 모두가 힘들었던 일 등등이 있었지만 네 자매에게 일년동안 일어난 일중에서 가장 의미있는 일은 네 명 모두 심경에 변화가 생겼는지 모두 한단계 성숙한 마음을 지니게 된 것이다. 메그는 사치스럽고 부유한 생활을 동경하는 마음을 조금 수그러들게 할 수 있어지고, 미스터 부르크란 남자와 사랑이 싹트기 시작했다. 그리고 조는 차츰 남자같이 털털대는 성격을 버리고 점점 여자다운 행동을 하기 위해 노력하기 시작했고, 베스는 좀 더 적극적인 성격을 가질 수 있게 되었으며 에이미는 쓸 데 없는 허영심과 질투심을 버리게 되었다. 그 후 일년 후, 찾아온 크리스마스에는 서로의 모습을 일년전과 비교해 보면서 미소를 짓게 된 것이다. 그리고, 마치가의 가족들에게 일년 후 가장 큰 크리스마스 선물으로는 전쟁터에서 아버지가 돌아오신 일이 되었다. 또 부르크씨와 메그가 서로 미래를 약속하는 것에서 이야기는 끝난다. 그냥 작품을 읽은 소감은 ??좋다?? 이다. 아마 이세상의 어떤 표현을 갖다가 붙여 댄 듯, 무슨 소용이 있으랴... 예술에 있어서 가장 그에 걸맞는 표현이다, 좋은 표현이다 하는 것은 ??좋다?? 이 한마디 인 것 같다. 다만, 한 가지 더 붙여 보자면 가슴이 따뜻해 지고 포근해 지는 느낌이랄까... 참고로 ??작은 아씨들??을 지은 작가는 Louisa. May Olkkut (루이자. M. 올컷) 이다. 뒤에 작품해설을 읽어 보게 되었는데 사실 이야기 속에서의 조세핀은 글쓴이 자신이었다. 실제로 올컷의 집안은 네 명의 자매였으며 이야기의 마치가는 곧 올컷가라고 할 수 가 있었고, 루이자는 올컷의 둘째 딸로 태어난 셈이다. 그녀는 자신의 식구들과 주변인물을 모티브로 삼아 ??작은아씨들?? 이란 하나의 작품을 탄생 시켰다. 얼마나 따뜻하고 아름다운 가족이었길래 이렇게 좋은 이야기를 썼을 까 싶기도 하지만 사실 실제로는 이야기에서처럼 아주 행복한 결말이 나기엔 힘들었다고 한다. 책 속의 베스는 실제로도 베스라고 했다. 그렇지만 실제의 베스는, 책에서처럼 성일홍에 걸렸다가 살아남지 못하고 결국엔 생을 마감했다고 한다. 그 일 말고도 여럿이 있기는 있다. 이런 결과로 미루어 볼 때 올컷은 작품 속에 자신의 바램을 담아 실제로도 행복했던 생활들을 조합하여 하나의 이야기를 만들어 낸 것이라고 본다. 실제로도 루이자가 행복했었더라면 어땠을 까, 하는 생각이 들었다. 그럼 좀 더 즐겁고 행복한 이야기가 나오지 않았었을까?? 어쨌든 숙제는 거의 다 끝나가게 되었다. 이제 해석만 하면 풀릴 문제이다만 걱정이 되기는 마찬가지이다. 그래도 힘들게 뛰어다니면서 한글 원본을 구하러 다니는 것도 재미 있었고 책을 몇 번이나 다시 보고 해석해가며 읽어가는 과정도 그리 나쁘지는 않았다고 생각한다. 안 그래도 방학 동안 머리가 터지도록 숙제를 하면서도 잠깐 시간이 날 때 텔레비전을 틀었다. 그런데 SBS에서 매주 토요일, 일요일 9시에 방영되는 ??작은 아씨들?? 이라는 제목의 드라마가 방영되고 있었다. 실제 원본의 이야기를 다른 방향으로 각색한 드라마 대본으로써 브라운관에 비쳐지는 현대판 ??작은아씨들??의 네 자매를 지켜보고 있자니 저절로 입가에 미소가 띄워지는 것 같다. 드디어 숙제가 거의 막바지에 다다른 것 같다. 생각해 보니까 나는 형제가 없어서 네 자매들의 생활이 형제 있는 집안의 아이들에 비해 이해가 떨어질 수도 있는 일이었다. 그렇다고 동생을 낳아달라는 생각은 죽어도 없다. 15살 차이의 동생은 어째 징그럽기도 하고, 그렇잖아도 조카 몇시간 돌보기도 귀찮은 나로서는 그저 책으로나마 간접적으로 형제 자매의 우애니 뭐니 하는 것을 느껴보았으면 함이다. 내가 생각한 대로 영어 해석이 제대로 되었을까 안되었을까는 나도 잘 모르겠다. 그렇지만 이 독후감이 어떻게 되었든 우리말로 느낀 감상은 무엇보다도 확실하다. 그것만이라도 잘 전달이 되었으면 함을 끝으로 독후감을 마친다. - Read world masterpiece "Little Women"s reading in English ...
