철학, 나는 그동안 철학은 아주 어려워서 현명한 학자나, 교수들만 공부하는 것인 줄 알았다. 그래서 처음에 제목만을 들었을 때는 너무 재미가 없을 것이라는 했다. 하지만 책장을 넘겨보니 재밌는 삽화들이 나의 관심을 끌었다. 이 책은 6가지 질문에 대한 아빠와 딸의 대화로 이루어져 있다. 나는 지금까지 이 6가지 질문을 당연하게 여겨왔기 때문에 꼼꼼히 따져야겠다는 생각을 해본 적이 없었다. 나는 이 6가지 질문 중에서 특히, ‘이기주의는 과연 나쁜가?’라는 질문과‘아홉 사람을 위해 한사람이 희생되어도 좋은가?’라는 질문들이 마음에 와 닿았다. ‘이기주의는 과연 나쁜가?!’ 나는 평소에 이기주의는 자기 자신만 생각하는 나쁜 태도인줄만 알았다. 그런데 이 책에서는 이기주의를 여러 관점으로 꼼꼼히 따져보았다. 여러 학자들이 이기심을 연구하였는데 이기주의를 좋다고 생각하는 긍정과 나쁘다고 생각하는 부정이 있다. 긍정 파에는 애덤 스미스와 니체가 있다. 애덤 스미스는‘자기 자신의 이익을 추구할 때 오히려 더 효과적으로 사회전체의 이익에 기여한다. 면서 꿀벌을 예로 들었다. 니체는‘자신을 진정으로 사랑하는 인간이야 말고 강한 인간이다.’라고 주장하였다. 부정 파에는 칼뱅이 있는데 칼뱅은‘자기를 사랑하는 마음은 다른 사람들에 대한 사랑을 가로막는다. 라고 주장하였다. 꿀벌을 예로 든 애덤 스미스의 말도 일리가 있지만 칼뱅의 주장이 나의 생각과 더 일치하다. 내가 이렇게 생각하는 이유는 내 주변에 이기주의자들이 몇 있는데 그 사람들은 자기만을 사랑하고 다른 사람을 사랑하지 않으며, 그런 행동들은 주변 사람들의 기분을 상하게 하기 때문이다. ‘아홉 사람을 위해 한사람이 희생해도 되는가?’ 공리의 원칙이란 다수의 행복을 위한 소수의 희생을 말하는 사상이다. 벤담의 사상으로 보면 소수가 다수의 행복을 증대시키려고 희생하는 것은 올바른 행위이다. 하지만 알프레드 시릴 여왕은‘선량한 삶이 참아 내기 어려울 정도의 속임수와 거짓말, 그리고 정의롭지 못한 행위를 이끌어 올 것’이라고 주장했다. 솔직히 나는 자발적으로라면 자신이 다수를 위해 희생한다는 것은 괜찮다고 생각한다. 왜냐하면, 테레사 수녀는 가난하고 소외받는 사람들에게 봉사하고 사랑을 베풀었다. 그런데도 테레사 수녀는 불행하지는 않기 때문이다. 하지만 사회나 국가를 위해 강제적으로 희생하는 것은 희생하는 소수를 매우 불행하게 만드는 것이므로 옳지 않다고 생각한다. 나는 이 책을 읽고 철학은 보통 사람들도 꼼꼼히 따져보면 할 수 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 그리고 나도 가끔씩은 무슨 일에 대해 꼼꼼히 따져보고 분석하는 습관을 길러야겠다.
