햄릿 독후감
방학도하고 집에서 빈둥빈둥 놀다가 친구 집엘 놀러 갔다. 친구는 방학 과제를 하고 있었다. 독후감을 써야 한다면서,
"넌 다했니?"
"당연히 안 했지. 그런걸 뭐 하러 하냐? 난 안 할꺼야."
"너 학생 맞아? 무늬만 학생 아냐?"
"하기 싫은걸 어쩌냐?"
"그러지 말고, 이 책 읽어봐."
"무슨 책인데?"
"`햄릿`이란 작품인데, 내용은 좋더라. 좀 비극적이라 그렇지만."
"그래? 그럼 읽어보지 뭐."
어째든 친구에게서 받은 책을 가지고 집으로 오긴 왔지만 읽을 맘이 생기지 않았다. 그렇게 책을 방치한지 일주일 후, 그 동안 잊어버리고 있었는데, 친구가 책을 가져다 달라는 말에 생각이 났다. 그냥 가져 다 주려다가 그래도 예의 상 읽어봐야 할 것 같아 책장을 넘겼다. 셰익스피어의 작품으로 5대 비극 중 하나인 햄릿. 이 글을 읽으면서 전에 주워들은 것이 생각났다. 셰익…(생략)

다. 햄릿은 흑왕의 눈치를 살피며 흑왕이 마실 잔에 독을 타 놓고, 흑왕은 햄릿에게 무사와 결투할 것을 부탁했다. 흥쾌히 승낙을 한 햄릿은 상대방의 칼에 독이 묻어있는 것을 발견하고 칼을 바꿔 시합을 할 것을 권했다. 흑왕은 당황했지만 그것을 허락했다. 결국 싸움은 햄릿의 승리였다. 그러나 그것이 끝은 아니였다. 경기를 지켜보던 햄릿의 어머니는 아들에 대한 걱정과 흥분한 나머지 흑왕의 잔을 들이켰다. 놀란 햄릿이 막았지만, 그의 어머닌 그 자리에서 숨지고 말았다. 그 모습을 본 흑왕은 햄릿에게 자신의 잘못을 용서하라면서 그의 칼에 숨을 거두었다. 그리고 햄릿 또한 피는 피를 부른다는 생각에 자신도 그 자리에서 숨을 거두고 만다.
햄릿은 흑왕에 대한 복수로 그 방법밖에 선택 할 수 없었는지. 꼭 죽음이 아니고서도 방법은 있었을 텐데... 햄릿의 선택이 어쩌면 잘못 된 것이라고 생각한다.
피는 피를 부른다면서 어머니가 마신 독물을 먹으며 자신의 미래도, 자신의 나라도, 모두 포기하고 죽어간 햄릿. 진정 권위에 욕심이 없었던 그였지만, 아버지를 위해 죽음을 무릅쓴 희생이 값지게 느껴지기도 한다. 나 같음 내 목숨 살려고 흑왕에게 아첨을 하며 살았을 텐데.... 그의 행동을 보면서 내 생각이 얼마나 짧고, 어리석은 가를 다시 느끼게 되었다.
비록 햄릿은 죽어 갔지만 그의 넋은 내 마음 깊이 새겨 두고 싶다. 그리고 이 책을 권한 친구가 너무 고맙다.
