예비 중학생인 나는 입학 전 과제를 받았다.
책을 읽고 서평을 써오는 것인데 솔직히 이 과제를 받고 조금 곤란했었다.
나는 홍길동전을 고전소설 이라는 딱딱하고 일정한 틀에 박혀있는 그런 소설이라고
생각했다. 고전이라는 단어에서도 그런 느낌을 주는 것 같다.
하지만 중학교 1학년의 국어 교과서에 나와 있는 홍길동전을 보고 그런 느낌은 점차
사라지기 시작했다. 교과서는 내용의 일부만 나온 거라서 읽기도 쉽고 단어의 뜻도
밑에 나와 있어서 내용을 보다 쉽게 파악 할 수 있었다.
서자(귀족의 사생아 : 그의 어머니는 하녀였다.)였기 때문에 그는 가족과 친하게 지낼
수 없었으며 그 뿐 아니라 아무리 명석하고 실력이 좋더라도 귀족이 될 수 없었다.
어느 가을 밤, 자신의 신세를 탄식하며 정원을 방황하다 아버지인 귀족을 만나
자신의 속마음을 하소연한다.
그러나 귀족은 아들의 마음을 알면서도 그가 거만해질까봐 아들을 크게 질책했다.
분노를 억제할 수 없었던 그는 어머니를 찾아서 집을 떠날 결심을 하고 집을 떠난다.
도둑단을 만난 그는 도둑들의 눈앞에서 바위를 가볍게 들어 버리고 도적의 우두머리
가 된다. 그리고 타락한 귀족의 돈과 재물을 훔쳐 가난한 일반시민에게 나누어 주었
다. 그리고 부하를 데리고 떠나다 율도국 이라는 나라를 발견하게 되고 율도
국의 우두머리가 된다.
이 책은 허균이 지은 우리나라 최초의 한글소설이라 전해지고 있다.
그 점에서 허균이 참 대단하다고 생각되고, 그 당시의 신분차별(서자)을 잘 표현한 것
같다. 이 책이 쓰여지게 된 동기는 전제군주의 폭정을 남용하던 조선시대에서 주인공
과 도둑단을 통하여 귀족들의 타락과 가식을 파헤치고 서자의 분노와 슬픔을 표현했
다. 이 책에서 가장 인상적인 장면은 서자였던 주인공이 귀족이 되는 장면이다.
어렸을 때부터 그토록 원했고 마음속의 꿈이 실현 되었으니 말이다.
반면, 가장 안타까운 것은 주인공이 아버지를 아버지라 할 수 없고 형님을 형님이라
부를 수 없는 신분차별 제도이다
또, 길동의 아버지는 길동을 마음속으로 아끼고 사랑하지만 그 마음을 표현할 수 없
었던 것도 안타깝다. 아버지가 자식에 대한 사랑을 표현할 수 없는 조선시대의 상황
이 원망스러웠다. 또, 주인공에게 배울 점이 있다면야 매우 많겠지만, 그 중 나는 그
의 용기를 배우고 싶다. 주인공의 모든 활동들이 용기가 없었다면 실현되지 않았을
것이다. 옳은 일을 위하여 자신의 목숨도 아끼지 않고 실천할 수 있는 용기야 말로
진정 이 시대를 살아가는 사람들에게 필요한 것이 아닐까한다.
또한, 내가 주인공이 살아있던 시대로 간다면 주인공과 함께 불쌍한 백성들을 도와주
고 싶다. 자기 자신만의 이득을 위하여 남을 짓밟고 일어서야 하면 나의 이익을 위해
서는 거짓과 탐욕으로 이웃의 것을 더 빼앗고 범죄와 만연하는 지금 이 시대에 주인
공과 같은 의를 위하여 일어서는 사람이 많아져서 훗날 주인공처럼 이름을 빛낼 위인
들이 많이 탄생 했으면 좋겠다.
