`황태자비 납치사건`이라는 뭔가 큰 사건이 있을 것만 같은 제목에, 그리고 신문의 한 면을 크게 장식한 광고로 인해 호기심에 이 책을 읽게 되었다. 책의 처음에 나와 있는 작가의 말이 이 책에 대한 나의 관심도를 더욱 높게 만들었다. 최근 문제가 되고 있는 일본의 역사 교과서 왜곡과 관련해서 일본의 입장과 우리의 처지 같은 것을 언급하고 있었다.
일본은 침략의 역사를 후손들에게 물려줄 수 없다고 생각해서 역사 교과서를 왜곡한 것이고, 우리 나라는 그것이 잘못 되었다는 것을 알지만 여러 가지 면에서 일본보다는 약소국의 입장에 놓여있어 제대로 된 항의 한번 못해봤다는 것이다. 또한 더욱 심각한 건 일본인들은 왜곡된 역사 교과서에 대한 우리 나라 국민들의 정의심이 금새 사그라들 것이라고 생각하는 것이다. 그런 생각에 일본인들은 한국인을 냄비에 비유한다. 처음에는 팔팔 끊어 오르더라고 금새 아무 일도 없었다는 듯이 가라앉는다는 것이다. 과거에 우리가 했던 몇몇 일들을 봤을 때 일본이 이렇게 말하더라도 할 말은 없다. 아무튼 이런 역사적으로 대립된 감정 사이에 소설 속에는 사건이 일어난다. 일본의 황태자비 마사코가 가부키 관람 도중 감쪽같이 납치된다. 일본의 상징인 황태자비를 납치한 범인은 한국인 김인후와 임선규였다. 이 사건을 조사하는 다나카 형사는 범인의 행적을 추적하던 중 외무성의 비밀 문서와 황태자비 납치가 어떤 연관성이 있음을 알게되었고 더욱 깊이 수사에 임한다. 한국인 범인 임선규는 역사 앞에 치욕적이고 비열한 조상을 가진 인물이었고, 반면 김인후는 역사 앞에 부끄럼 없는 조상을 가진 인물로 둘 사이는 임선규의 조상들이 김인후의 조상들에게 해를 가함으로 그에 죄스러움을 느낀 임선규가 김인후를 정성으로 돌보는 중에 성립된 것이다. 수사가 진행되고 있는 가운데 납치범들은 일본 정부에 뜻밖의 제의를 한다. 명성황후 시해 사건 당시 조선의 내부 고문관이었던 에조가 일본 외무성으로 타전한 비밀문서 435호 전문을 공개하라는 것이었다. 그러나 일본 정부는 무슨 이유에서인지 황태자비의 목숨이 위태로운 위기 상황임에도 불구하고 435호의 존재를 완강히 부인한다. 이에 일본인들은 황태자비 납치 사건과 사라져 버린 의문의 435호 문서를 둘러싸고 술렁이기 시작하는데 결국 그 문서는 일본이 한 나라의 국모인 명성황후를 죽인 후 농락한 사실을 담은 내용의 문서였다. 범인을 검거하는 과정에서 김인후는 목숨을 잃고 황태자비는 무사히 풀려났다. 황태자비의 도움으로 임선규는 한국으로 돌아올 수 있게 되었고 왜곡된 역사 교과서도 채택되지 못하였다.
이런 내용의 소설인데 읽으면서 역사 앞에 우리 민족이 얼마나 나약했으며 비겁했는지를 느끼고 생각했으며, 일본과 우리의 관계는 과연 이런 식으로 남아 있을 수밖에 없는가 하는데서 가슴 답답함과 아쉬움을 느꼈다. 책에서 한국의 십대는 연예인에, 중년층은 경제적 성장에 미쳐 나라를 생각하지 못하고 노년층만이 역사 앞에 대응한다는 말을 봤을 때, 정말 우리가 무관심했구나..하는 것을 새삼 느껴 마음가짐을 새롭게 할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 요즘 세상은 정신을 똑바로 차리지 않는다면 어느 순간 나라를 잃어버릴 것 같은 세상인 것 같다. 민족에 대한 사랑, 나라에 대한 사랑, 역사에 대한 관심을 키워나가 나라를 잃는 설움을 맛보지 않도록 노력해야겠고, 또한 점점 발전하는 세계 속의 한국이 되도록 힘써야겠다.
